Backpackers Newcastle -- for all your accommodation needs

Frequently Asked Questions

To help you with some questions you may have, here is a list of frequently asked questions and our answers.

1. Where is the supermarket, bank, beach?
These are all very near our backpackers. The supermarket is open 24 hours 7 days a week, Beaumont Street is one of the party streets of the whole city. Like the supermarket it is closest to our hostel!

Also nearby is: The city museum, a budget mechanic, the motor registry office, the largest MOTOR AUCTION HOUSE in Newcastle, numerous doctors surgeries, an Internet Cafe ($4/hour), 2 car rental agencies (Budget and Thrifty), Wickham and Hamilton railway stations, Ambulance Station plus numerous pubs and clubs. The basketball stadium is 2km west, the International Sports Stadium and The Entertainment Centre 2.5km west.

Bar beach and Merewether beach are a 15 minute walk.

2. Is the backpackers on the beach?
There is not one, but 5 beaches surrounding the city. We are a few blocks from one but we visit them all everyday when we go looking for the spot to do our surfing lessons.
3. How far is the Hunter Valley/Wineries?
It takes about 45 minutes to go to the Hunter Valley Vineyards and about the same to Port Stephens (Whale / Dolphin watching) by car.
4. Do you have work opportunities?
We often need staff at our hostel but the minimum period of service is 6 weeks. Grape picking is popular in February. Charlie Bells Agricultural Agency (Ph. (02) 4938 5299) employs people skilled with farm machinery and the land. We also get calls for labourors.
5. Are there many stairs?
No, our place is all single level
6. How do I get to the city?
Walk 1.5 block to the left of our hostel and turn right. You are now on Hunter St - our main street. It gradually gets busier and after 4 blocks you are in Newcastle City. Alternatively, catch the free bus, operational every 15 minutes everyday between 7:30am and 6pm.
7. Is it cold/hot there?
Perceptions differ depending on where you come from. Our backpackers is gas heated in winter and fan-cooled in summer. We also have a swimming pool to cool down in summertime. Expect T-Shirt weather 8 months of the year.
8. How is security?
By not being opposite the bus station or the main street we are in a quiet, safe environment. Everyone who checks in gets a door code and room key. A safe is available (free of charge) in the office. This is a very private hostel. Parking is the best in the city, particularly for vans and larger cars, it is unrestricted and free!
9. Is your hostel next to the bus station?
No, we are on a quiet side street off the main street, but we pick up guests from the bus station when they call (freecall 1800 - 33 34 36) and deliver them back to it at the end of their stay. Did you really want to stay near a fumy, noisy bus station?
10. Do you provide blankets?
We provide a fitted sheet, pillow, pillowcase free of charge. You are so welcome to use your own sleeping bag or blanket however we do have duvets and blankets available to rent at the office for only $3.00 for your entire stay.
